10th Transgender Remembrance Day - Saturday 22nd November 2008
MCC Edinburgh will be marking the 10th Transgender Remembrance Day with a non-religious vigil on Saturday 22nd November 2008 at 3.00 - 4.30pm at MCC Edinburgh, Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EL. Transgender Remembrance Day was founded on 20th November 1998 to mark the death of Rita Hester, an American transwoman.

Since then the day has developed into a global event with vigils and actions held to remember transgender people throughtout the world who have lost their lives due to transphobic hate crime. Each year the names of those known to have died are gathered and spoken as a symbol of our resistance to the continuation of hate crimes due to gender identity.

The vigil is jointly organised by MCC Edinburgh, the LGBT Centre for Health and Wellbeing, Transmen Scotland, LGBT Youth Scotland and the Equality Network.

Rev Elder Nancy Wilson visits MCC Edinburgh
MCC Edinburgh hosted the first visit of Rev Elder Nancy Wilson to Scotland. MCCers from across Scotland gathered to hear Rev Wilson's inspiring message about the place of MCC as a global movement for change bringing God's inclusive love to all people. She spoke about her history with MCC from the early 1970's and how the denomination has responded, first, to the full inclusion of women, and then how the denomination was responded to HIV. The role of young people in MCC is now crucial as they are our future leaders, and it is true that our future is in their hands.

Rev Elder Wilson is the Moderator of Metropolitan Community Church an inclusive Christian church that affirms and welcomes all people including the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. During her visit to the UK she was a guest speaker at the conference of the European Forum of Lesbian and Gay Christians.
